Benjamin Apthorp Gould (1824-1896), US astronomer. Gould studied at Harvard College, and then published papers on mathematics and astronomy while working with Carl Friedrich Gauss in Germany. Gould is best known, though, for his founding of the Astronomical Journal in 1849, soon after his return to the USA. It soon became one of the world's leading astronomical journals. Gould also worked for the US Coast Survey, and did extensive work helping to develop astronomy in Argentina. He was awarded the 1883 Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. This image is from volume 4 (1896) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
