Play is a royal road tohealth, happiness, and strength of character, and to education. But in cities, towns, and sometimes in the country, childrenare not encouraged to play. Often they are prevented fromplaying in the right way and go from bad to worse. Play is so essential in the life of children that the wisestbusiness men and the most progressive and thoughtful educa-tors have united to provide play places, games, and leaders orplay directors. It has been discovered that in no other way can children beproperly prepared for citizenship in a free country, for co-operation, for a useful life and a peaceful old age,—exceptthrough organized or directed play.
