THEOSOPHY - THOUGHT-FORMS - ASTRAL PLANE The appearance, on the astral plane, of events (the so-called Thought-forms, which are really Emotion-forms) at a shipwreck. One form [bottom left] shows nothing other than the eruption of the livid grey of fear, rising out of utter selfishness. The grey form to the right is that emitted by someone caught in terror, yet attempting self-control. The colourful third form is the thought-form that corresponds with a feeling of firm resolution - it is a form emitted by one of the officers in charge of the safety of the passengers. The red 'beak' of the form reveals his anger that the accident should have occurred; the brilliant yellow indicates that his mind is already working at an attempt to solve the problems that confront him. Paintings of thought-forms were originated by a group of Theosophists, towards the end of the nineteenth century. The paintings were done, following the occult observations of such 'thoughts' or 'visions' on the astral plane, by Charles Leadbeater (Besant claimed such an astral vision, but it is unlikely that this was genuine), by John Varley (a descendant of the John Varley who taught William Blake astrology), Mr. Prince and Miss Macfarlane, all three of whom painted 'in earth's dull colours the forms clothed in the living light of other worlds'. The paintings were reproduced, and discussed, in Annie Besant and Leadbeater, Thought-Forms, 1901 edn, from which these plates are photographed
