Mary Alice McWhinnie (1922-1980), US biologist. McWhinnie was a professor of biology at DePaul University. A world-renowned authority on krill, she had begun working on research ships offshore in 1962 at the time of this photograph. She went on to winter over at the National Science Foundation's McMurdo Station in Antarctica. In 1974, she became the first US woman to serve as chief scientist at an Antarctic research station.
