Copy of First Commission in the Revenue Cutter Service. This is a copy of the first commission in the Revenue Cutter Service, that hardy, seagoing band of swift sailing ships which time was to change into the United States Coast Guard. Signed by George Washington, the first president, on March 21, 1791, the commission appoints Hopley Yeaton of New Hampshire as master of a revenue cutter. The second signature is that of Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State in Washington's cabinet.
