According to Greek mythology, Andromeda was the daughter of Ethiopian rulers Cepheus and Cassiopeia. The god of the sea, Poseidon, was so angered that Cassiopeia claimed Andromeda was more beautiful than the sea nymphs known as the Nereids that he ordered a sea monster to ravage Ethiopia. It would only be appeased if Andromeda was sacrificed to it. Andromeda was then stripped and chained to a rock (as seen in this 1890s illustration). The Greek hero Perseus rescued her. The messenger god Hermes (Mercury to the Romans) had given Perseus winged sandals and a cap that rendered him invisible.
