Cross bedded sand deposits. Sedimentary beds of sand and gravel deposited by water in the Netherlands during the Holocene epoch. This exemplifies the earliest stage in the formation of sedimentary rocks. Cross bedding and ripple marks are typical of young, unlithified sediments in Holland. This section was prepared by coating a vertical section, for example from a sand- or gravel-pit, with lacquer. Once the lacquer hardens the resulting lacquer profile can be mounted and studied.
