A DAY IN SAXON SWITZERLAND. <\. 3S£ A PERFECT day in June, and in Dres-den so perfect that myfriend Egeria and I de-cided to make an excur-sion into the picturesquecountry near us, which iscalled Saxon objective point wasthe Bastei. The southernpart of the kingdom ofSaxony, beginning about eight miles aboveDresden and extending beyond the Bohe-mian frontier, from its mountainous char-acter is called Saxon Switzerland, althoughit has none of the snow-peaks, glaciers, ormassive grandeur of real Swiss ZWINGERTHURM. A DAY IN SAXON SWITZERLAND. 51 The river Elbe flows through the centreof this country; and the mountains of theGiant, the Riesengebirge, and the Erzge-birge form the boundary between it andBohemia. Among these rocks are foundbeds of jet, kaolin, fullers earth, marble, slate, agate, jasper, and chalcedony, andthe Saxon silver mines are as celebratedas Saxony woollens. The Bastei, or Bas-tion, is the name given to one of the lar-gest masses of rock which rise on theright bank of the river. Great blocks ofcalcareous sandstone form a wall, throughwhich narrow lanes and gorges are cut,as though by some effort of modern engi-neering. The action of water is everywhere visi-ble, as the rocks are never angular, butsmoothly rounded, rising in pyramids andpillars, tapering in a conical form to dilateagain as they rise higher, resembling on alarge scale those cavern formations where 52 LITTLE JOURNEYS ABROAD. a descending stalactite rests on an ascend-ing s
