A strong by several smaller ones on the autero-superior mar-gin of each orbit; supraocular margin elevated, consisting of asingle row of denticles anteriorly and several rows space deeply concave. Preorbital with a radiatingseries of denticulated ridges, from which the infraorbitalseries extends backwards to the preopercnlum which bearsa slightly enlarged spine below the hinder margin of theeye. Preopercnlum with two, sometimes three spines, theupper one the larger though its length is less than the width ofthe interorbital space ; no antrorse spine on the lower with two strong spines, the lower terminating anoblique denticulated ridge. Cranium with a series of three orfour ridges diverging backwards from the base of a small spinebehind the eye on each side; besides these there are severalother spines and ridges, the arrangement of which can he seenin the Fig. 11. Insidiator jugosus. Anterior nostril with a short tentacle, posterior nostril tubular :no supraocular tentacle. Opercular membrane with a largetongue-like lobe below the preopercular spines. Teeth minute, closely set in a broad band on the upper jaw, with some largerinner ones near the symphysis. On the lower jaw they are FISHES. — MCCULLOCH. 145 uniform and arranged in a narrow band. They are somewhatlarger on the vomer, and forrn two widely separated, ratherelongate patches which are broader in front than each with a long narrow band, the anterior teeth thelargest. Tongue spatulate, truncate or emarginate anteriorly. Body covered with moderately large ctenoid scales whichextend forward onto the operculum, and postorbital portion ofthe preoperculuni. The scales of the lateral line are raised butnot enlarg
