Blue plaque on Brownsfield Mill, where the Avro aircraft company was founded. Ancoats, Manchester, England, UK
Brownfield Mill was a cotton spinning mill built c1825 and extended shortly afterwards to form an L-plan. The chimney (not visible in this photograph) is now Manchester's oldest surviving mill chimney. A rare surviving example of a type of construction employing heavy timber and cast iron, a system which provided load-bearing strength (well-suited to room-and-power mills in which upper floors would also be used for very heavy machinery) and slow-burn properties. Between 1910 and 1913 it became one of the earliest aircraft factories in the world when the A V Roe & Co company (Avro) was founded here.
