The little settle-ment of Fiskernaes rejoices in its codfish, as well asthe other staples of the upper coast. It is situated onFishers Fiord, some eight miles from the open bay,and is approached by an island-studded channel ofmoderate OOMIAK, OR WOMENS BOAT, F I S H I N G — F I S K E R N A E S. We saw the codfish here in all the stages of j)repara-tion for the table and the market; the stockfish, driedin the open air, without salt; crapefish, salted andpressed; fresh-fish, a lucus a non lucendo, as salt as aMediterranean anchovy: we laid in supplies of all ofthem. The exemption of Fiskernaes from the con-tinued fogs, and its free exposure to the winds as theydraw up the fiord, make it a very favorable place fordrying cod. The backbone is cut out, with the excep-tion of about four inches near the tail; the body ex-panded and simply hung upon a frame: the head, a MR. LASSEN. 23 luxury neglected with us, is carefully dried in a separatepiece. Seal and shark oils are the next in importance amongthe staples of Fiskernaes.^^ The spec or blubber is pur-chased from the natives with the usual articles of ex-change, genera
