View SW across the River Wear to Finchale Priory, England, UK. St Godric settled here as a hermit in the early 1100s after a life as a seafaring merchant-adventurer. The present priory was built in the mid-C13th on the site of his hermitage by Benedictine monks from Durham. Later it became a rest-house/retreat hostel for monks from Durham.
