Brave Roger Willams protested,in 1634, that no one should be bound to worship,or to maintain worship, without his own seems to us just and sensible; but the PilgrimFathers deemed it treason and heresy, and banishedthe bold Baptist and his comrades. It issignificant that at about this time the office of rulingelder fell into disuse. It was an era fit for witchtrials and scandals. The word went forth from Mather, the President of Harvard College,that conscientious people would soon have to gatherchurches out of churches.
