There are several forms of scrubbers. Theabove described is the simplest, and except thatin some of them the scrubbing material is me-chanically moved, so as to come alternately incontact with the water and the gas, the principleof all is substantially the same. The gas passes from the scrubbers into thepurifiers. These are rectangular boxes that areordinarily built from 3 to 8 feet deep, and of ahorizontal section depending upon the amountof gas that it is desired to purify in them. Theyare ordinarily built in sets of four or six, so. XlL r^^^ ^^^-^^^ ^ Fig. 6. gas inlet at the bottom of the B is the gasoutlet. When the purifying capacity ofthe material in the has become exhausted, which is determined by appropriate tests, thegas is shut off from that box, the lid is raised, and the material is removed — to be carted away,if it is lime, or to be spread upon a brick orconcrete floor, for re-oxidizing, if it is ironsponge.
