In 1745, having been very active in makingplans, and superintending the operations neces-sary for the defence of the city of Edinburghagainst the Highland army, Mr. Maclaurin was,upon their entering the city, obliged to withdrawto the north of England, when he was invited bythe archbishop of York to reside with him. Onhis journey southward he had a fall from hishorse, and the fatigue, anxiety, and cold to whichhe was exposed on this occasion, laid the founda-tion of a dropsy, of which he died soon after hisreturn to Edinburgh, June 14, 1746.
