Burnside Bridge was named after Major General Ambrose E. Burnside who failed to take this crossing for over 3 hours on the day of the battle, his Union men being cut down by a small group (450 v 14,000) of Confederate Georgian sharpshooters stationed on the high bluffs of the west bank.
