St Andrews Castle is 12th Century ruin located on a promontory overlooking a small beach called Castle Sands in the Royal Burgh of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. It housed wealthy and powerful bishops when St Andrews served as the ecclesiastical centre of Scotland during the years before the Protestant Reformation, after which the castle became a centre of religious persecution and controversy until a French fleet supporting the Catholic cause arrived, directing a devastating artillery bombardment. With the eventual success of the Reformation in Scotland, the castle fell rapidly into ruin.
