It must be remembered that when we refer to the hand we include as well the forearm to the elbow, which in all cases, especially in labor and operative obstetrics, should receive the same conscientious cleansing as the hand and fingers. To this end the coat should be removed and the sleeves rolled up before the cleansing process begins. Women physicians should have the sleeves of both arms so made as readily to permit of being rolled back to the elbow. All methods of disinfection should be preceded by thorough and prolonged scrubbing with a hand-brush in soap and hot.
