Loch of Houlland Iron Age broch built on a short promontory jutting from the W shore, Shetland, Scotland, UK, looking NE to Priesthoulland farmhouse.

Loch of Houlland Iron Age broch built on a short promontory jutting from the W shore, Shetland, Scotland, UK, looking NE to Priesthoulland farmhouse. South of the broch is a narrow causeway leading to an island in the loch. Although ruinous & choked with rubble the lintelled entrance & corbelled guard cell are visible at the WSW & traces of an upper mural gallery on the N: the walls stand at least 2m clear of the rubble. A wide stone rampart guards access from the shore & two outer lines of walling were added later when other structures were built around the disused broch. The causeway to the island was probably built at this later date when the broch was converted to an open settlement; the island would have been a good place to graze & safeguard stock.
