Dalmatia, the Quarnero and Istria, with Cettigne in Montenegro and the island of Grado . time ofEuphrasius the subsidence of the soil occasioneddifficulties, and that advantage was taken of therebuilding to raise the level of the floor. The oldpavements were therefore buried, and the newmosaic pavements of which we see the remains werelaid two feet nine inches above them. Finally thissecond pavement has in its turn been buried by theraising of the floor in 1881. The stalls, of which I give an illustration (PlateLXIII), stand in a side chapel not shewn on theplan, and are of Venetian work of the first half ofthe fifteenth century, to judge from the analogy ofthose at Arbe, Zara, and elsewhere. The figureshave been painted and gilt, and the lower partof one standard end has a figure of a femalesaint with a little kneeling bishop, probably thedonor. The treasury of the duomo contains a pretty os-tensorio decorated with enamel datmg apparentlyfrom about 1470, with the arms of a bishop, azure 330 Parenzo: the Canonica. [Ch. xxxi. three bends or, surmounted by a mitre. There is. \t\ ?^^^-PARENZO Fig. no. also a small cross of enamel enclosing carved wood, like those at Savina inthe Bocche, with an in-scription in gold thread, giving the name of themaker Ezekiel, a monkof Laura in MountAthos. It seems to beof fifteenth centuryworkmanship.
