March 30, 1907.] STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 557 STEAM MOTOR CAR FOR THE ROCK ISLAND The Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway Companywill soon receive a self-propelled steam motor car from theRailway Auto Car Company, of New York, the Americancompany which controls the patents and manufacturing datafor the Ganz system. From the general plan and elevationof this car shown herewith it will be seen that the totallength over end sills is 54 ft. ioj4 ins. The car has seats ^— STEAM MOTOR WITH PARTS EXPOSED for fifty-two passengers, including sixteen in the smokingcompartment. The baggage room is 7 ft. i^ ins. long, andthe motormans compartment at the forward end of the car,which contains the generator and accessories, is but 6 ins. long over all. The coal liunker is supported over the ficient for a continuous run of about 60 miles. The steamgenerator is of the standard Ganz type and 42 ins. in outsidediameter. It is capable of developing a maximum of 120hp in conjunction with the compound steam motor mountedin the forward truck and which drives on the rear axlethereof. The half-tone view shows the steam motor with the coverenclosing the gears and link motion removed. This motoris compound and steam-jacketed and is entirely gear case is partly filled with oil so that all movingparts receive a continuous and thorough lubrication. Thenormal speed of this motor is 600 r. p. m., although it canbe operated satisfacto
