Christ Church Coldharbour leith Hill Dorking Surrey

Situated on the slopes of Leith Hill, Christchurch was consecrated on the 19 October 1848 and is twinned with St. James' of Abinger Common. The church has a 13th-century style chancel and is made of local stone. An organ chamber was added in 1904 by Sir A. Hargreaves Brown. On the 22 February 1868 the marriage of the parents of the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams took place: Arthur Vaughan Williams and Margaret Wedgwood - great grand-daughter daughter of Josiah Wedgwood and Caroline Darwin, elder sister of Charles Darwin who had lived at Leith Hill Place. The French impressionist Lucien Pissarro lived in Coldharbour during the first world war and exiled Polish poet Marian Hemar (1901-1972) lived there until his death in 1972, and is buried in the churchyard. Lieing on a Greensand ridge to the south west of Dorking, Leith Hill rises to 297 metres (965 feet) and is the highest point in south east England. On the summit is an 18th century Gothic tower. With its challenging gradients and aesthetic qualities, Leith Hill, Coldharbour and Ockley are popular cycling locations for cycling events throughout the year.
