Thefirst emanation from his mind was theinvention of a screw for the propulsion oiwater craft, but on application for apatent, found that he was forestalled buta short time by John Ericsson. Subse-quently he invented a machine for sowingwheat in drills, which was used to a greatextent throughout the west. He then stud-ied medicine, and in 1847-8 attendedlectures at the Indiana Medical Collegeat Laporte, and in 1848-9 at the OhioMedical College at Cincinnati. He laterdiscovered a method of transmitting powerthrough the medium of compressed air. A. COMPENDIUM OF BIOGRAPHY. 119 double-acting hemp break was also inventedby him. The invention, however, by whichDr. Gatling became best known was thefamous machine gun which bears his he brought to light in 1861-62, and onthe first trial of it, in the spring of the latteryear, two hundred shots per minute werefired from it. After making some improve-ments which increased its efficiency, it wassubmitted to severe trials by our govern-ment at the arsenals at Frankfort, Wash-ington and Fortress Monroe, and at otherpoints. The gun was finally adopted byour government, as well as by that of GreatBritain, Russia and others.
