Harry George Hawker (1889-1921), Australian aviator, standing in front of an aeroplane. Hawker set several aviation endurance, height and speed records in 1913. Here on 10 May 1919, he is preparing for an attempt at a transatlantic flight from St John, New Brunswick, Canada. Hawker and McGrieve attempted this transatlantic flight on 18 May 1919, but their plane ditched in the sea and they had to be rescued by a passing ship. From 1912 he worked on aircraft design with the Sopwith Aviation Company, and then in 1920 formed the Hawker Engineering Company. He was killed in an air crash on 12 July 1921, at Hendon, England.
