1982 Nottingham University Lecture The Explosives Man Brian Shaw,Nottingham alumnus and legendary chemistry lecturer Professor Lieutenant Colonel Brian Shaw. It was the combination of Shaw’s military experience and academic knowledge which would lead him to become one of Britain’s most accomplished demonstration lecturers. This was Shaw’s Thunder and Lightning experiment He performed the lecture over 1,600 times, all over the world, until 1990 when he retired at 92. A quietened lecture theatre waited with anticipation as the professor carefully loaded a Crimean War musket, inserting a tallow candle into the barrel in place of a bullet. Taking aim, he fired, the force sending the candle through several thicknesses of plywood and breaking a brick in half – he had successfully demonstrated how gunpowder works as a propellant, and amazed the audience in the process. Being taught by Nottingham alumnus and legendary chemistry lecturer Professor Lieutenant Colonel Brian D Shaw (Chemistry 1922) was a lively affair. Tasked in the late 1920s with making chemistry lectures at Nottingham more exciting, Shaw’s hair-raising explosives lecture was born. Charming generations of Nottingham students and alumni with his humourous and maverick approach to chemistry, Professor Shaw’s enduring legacy lives on at the University where his visionary experiments are still performed today
