The spiralling strands of the DNA helix (orange) are composed of complex chemical groups known as nucleotides. Complementary pairing between nucleotides on opposite strands of the helix (coloured bars) holds the structure together. The sequence of nucleotides along the DNA helix specifies the production of proteins. DNA fingerprinting is a diagnostic technique used to identify individuals from their DNA. It involves the examination of regions of DNA known to be unique for each person.
