Indonesia: From a 14th-century relief at the Javanese temple Candi Panataran, this scene from the Ramayana shows the monkey king Sugiwa's army carrying a large gong. The Ramayana is one of two ancient Hindu epics, the other being the Mahabharata. In the Ramayana, Rama's wife Sita is kidnapped by the evil demon Ravana and taken to Lanka as a hostage. She is finally rescued by Hanuman, the heroic monkey god.
