A little east of Monmouth is one of the most extensive mining com-panies in the country. Coal of a superior quality was found here, about1871, and active preparations at once commenced to mine at this seam is about twenty inches in thickness, and was found at a depth ofabout sixty feet. A far more valuable industry, and one which occupiesthe almost entire attention of the company—The Monmouth Mining andManufacturing Company—is that of tile making.
