The Spaniards could clearlyelect any person they wished to be king, and if they looked for such a person amongthe scions of sovereign or formerly sovereign houses, all that could be demandedwas that the elected king should renounce all hereditary right to another throne,in order that a union of the Spanish with another monarchy, and the consequent h^ 1^ iT*^ W^-.
