These observations confirm the clinicalimpression that the first stage of labor is usually shortened by the useof scopolamin or hyoscine. Quinine.—Six patients fall into this group. One patient was given3 grains of quinine and urea-hyclrobromide hypodermically; one wasgiven four grains hypodermically, and later ten grains of the sulphateof quinine by mouth; four were given 10 grains of the sulphate the two in whom quinine was administered hypodermically, one •v/v • A- •• Ar A f%~K a A >A >v / V/ U ; I ; -• f. i I i i r • / Fig. 6.—Pitnitrin, two minims, was given at point indicated by arrow. The latter showed an increase in the strength of thepains when quinine was administered orally. The length of the con-tractions was decreased in both instances after the hypodermic useof quinine, while the rapidity was increased in one and unchangedin another. When quinine was given orally there was an increase in the strengthof contractions four times, once quite marked, and once there wasa decrease in the strength of contractions. The duration of the painswas increased once, unchanged once and decreased three times. Therapidity of contractions was increased twice, unchanged twice, and ECBOLICS EN FIRST STAGE OF LABOR 69 diminished at once. From this rather limited ser
