Y., then a wikler-ness, and became one of the most active and substantial citizens of the newsettlement. He was captain of the militia of that town, and on the occasionof the landing of the British at Sodus, on a Sunday, in June, 1813, he andhis company were suddenly summoned from public worship to repair to thedefense of that place. They marched all the afternoon and night, andreached Sodus Point a little after sunrise, in time to see the burning villageand the retreating vessels of the enemy. His company remained at Sodus aweek, attached to Col. Swifts regiment, but had no further call for action.*In May, 1822, he
