While the work of laying out,as it is carried on in the boiler shop, requires considerabletechnical knowledge in addition to that gained by a practicalmechanic in the course of his experience in the shop, yet acomplete mastery of such subjects as geometry, mechanicsand similar branches of elementary mathematics is notessential for doing the work. For this reason no attempt hasbeen made to present these subjects separately from a theo-retical standpoint. The practical application of certain ofthe principles involved in these subjects is, however, veryimportant, and this has been explained in a practical way inconnection with different jobs of laying out which form a partof the every-day work in every boiler shop.
