There was yet no other incorporated town in theCounty. Military domination still existed and the rumblings of athreatened volcanic outburst, though still heard, were grow-ing less ominous. The white people were slowly regainingtheir power, and the hopes, so brightened in the expectationof the election of Horatio Seymour, as President, in 1868,were revived in the nomination of Horace Greeley, in had been one of the bondsmen of Jefferson Davis and.
