The growth maybe pigmentary or vascular. Etiology.—None of the various theories which have been advancedto account for the existence of nevi is well established. The frequentoccurrence of vascular nevi in such regions as the back of the head andnape of the neck has given rise to the belief that these marks may beproduced by intra-uterine pressure. Virchow, however, emphasizedthe predilection of the growths for the embryonic fissures of the skin,37. Females are more frequently affected than males. Symptomatology.—The pigmentary moles comprise ncevus pilus, asmooth, pigmented spot; ncevus pilosus, the hairy mole; ncevus verru-cosus, a raised warty growth; ncevus lipomatodes, which contains hy-pertrophied fat tissue; and ncevus linearis, which is usually unilateral, and frequently follows the distribution of cutaneous nerves. The molesmay be brown or black, single or multiple, and are most common onthe face, neck, and back. Vascular nevi range in character from small capillary angiomata tolarge, raised, pulsating tumors. One of the most disfiguring marks isthe ncevus flammeus, or port-wine stain. This is a bright red orpurple spot, of irregular outline and more or less uneven surface, com-monly found on the face, and covering an area which may be
