It is on this ride from the Upper Basin that some of the finestscenery in the Park is passed. At Shoshone Point one has amagnificent view of Shoshone Lake and the Three Tetons, fifty-five or more miles distant. About noon the tourist reaches theshores of beautiful Yellowstone Lake, the largest and finestnavigable body of water at its height in the civilized One oj the most picturesque scenes in the Park—above the Upper Fall At the West Arm lunch station an appetizing lunch is served,notwithstanding the fact that it is more than a thousand milesfrom a market of any considerable size, and that everything hasbeen hauled by freight teams nearly seventy-five miles over moun-tains more than 8,000 feet above the sea level. On the lake are excursion boats which make regular trips be-tween the West Arm and the Lake Hotel. This is not a part of theregular trip, the boats being owned and operated independentlyand charging about $3 for the one-way ride. There are manylakes, but Yellowstone is as distinctive among these as Yellow-stone Park is distinctive among the parks of the country. Theboat need not be used for the mere sake of novelty, however.
