The hillwhich fahaway In Hip ualei-flow I HZ I I i/>< haf it doesbelow theFalls ; andthen broad-ening out un-til the lowerpart runs par-allel with theupper, but onehundred and fiftyfeet below ; only re-quired the cutting ofa canal from its high-er level to the edge ofthe hill which falls awayto the water flowing at itsbase, to give a minimumhead of one hundred andthirty feet. At the end ofthis canal is built a dam orbulkhead, in the base of whichare set the penstocks, for largepipes), which carry the water tothe power house below. This canals one thousand feet long by onehundred feet wide and twenty feetdeep, and was excavated out of solidrock. The left side is of temporarycharacter only, allowing an easy removalwhen the canal is widened for furtherpower development. The bulkhead tapersfrom thirty-two feet at the base, to fifteen feet.
