Nor should alcohol be used beforeor after paracentesis, since it increases the causticity of Bonains solu-tion (Canuyt-Rozier). Absolute anesthesia of the drum-head is ratherdifficult to realize, owing to its epidermis and its vascularization duringan inflammatory process. It is recommended that a few drops of ^^^ip auricular m Cartilage ^^^ly^^^^^^ spacGiandaar layer Ossicles. The operation will then be painless. Removal of the Ossicles.—If the drum is ruptured when the removalof the ossicles is contemplated, as is ordinarily the case, a few drops ofa 10 per cent, cocain-adrenalin solution poured into the ear reaches the OPERATIONS ON THE HEAD 151 tympanic cavity. But the irregularities of that cavity do not permitof an even distribution of the solution along its walls. The anesthesia, therefore, is not always satisfactory. The external auditory canalmust then be injected from inside, as described (page 148), or Neu-manns injection (Fig. 123) resorted to and made in the followingmanner: The junction of the cartilaginous portion of t
