The subject of this sketch was the son of James C. and JaneE. Foster, and was born in Franklin Township, Ross county,Ohio, May ord, 1H42. He was inured to toil on his fathers farm,and secured an education as liberal as the public and privateschools of his neighborhood could furnish, together with a coursein a private military school at Chillicothe, just prior to the war. He enlisted as a private in Company F., 53rd O. V. I., Oct-ober 17th, 1861. Upon the organization of the company, hewas made first sergeant. January 1st, 1862, his services and abili-ties being recognized he was promoted to second lieutenant, andthe following September was transferred to Company I. May 11th 1863, the Executive powers of the Nation had decided to callinto requisition the colored troops, and the organization of thesame was commenced
