Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is a white blood cell from the body's immune system that has been modified to fight cancer. A blood sample is taken from a cancer patient, and the T-cells extracted from it. The T-cells are then genetically engineered to produce chimeric antigen receptors (CARs) on their surfaces that recognise targets on the patient's cancerous cells. The patient receives an infusion of the CAR T-cells, which attack any cancerous cells and destroy them. As of early 2017 there are a number of clinical trials underway to establish the effectiveness and safety of CAR T-cell immunotherapy. Magnification: x10,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
