Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), British author. Dickens is famous as the author of novels such as 'Oliver Twist' (1839), 'David Copperfield' (1850) and 'Great Expectations' (1861). His works are still popular over a century after his death, and have never gone out of print. His works included commentaries on the inequities of Victorian society. He himself worked in a factory aged twelve, after his father had been imprisoned for debt. Dickens married in 1836 and had ten children. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
