Memorial Plaque Scottish merchant, Alexander Chalmers, 4-times mayor of Warsaw, Shoemakers' House wall, 10 Waski Dunaj, Warsaw

Originally built in the 16th century, the building, where Scottish merchant, Alexander Chalmers lived in the late 17th century, was converted in 1799 to become the Seat of the Shoemakers' Guild, shoemakers, at that time, being one of the largest groups of craftsmen in the Old Town. The building, partially destroyed during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, was later demolished and rebuilt. It now houses the Leathercraft Museum. This white plaque, in Polish and English, is entitled 'Alexander Chalmers (1645-1703, Four-Time Mayor of Warsaw' and reads: 'Here lived Alexander Chalmers - a Scot, merchant, exceptional royal clerk and faithful subject of the Polish King. He came to Poland around 1676, where he changed his name to Aleksander Czamer. He served as a judge, and was a four-time Mayor of Warsaw in 1691, 1694, 1696 and 1702. He was a deputy to King August 11's coronation parliament. His life and service are a testimony to several hundred years of fruitful presence of the Scottish diaspora on Polish territory.'
