India. Corbett National Park. As well as being the land of the tiger it is a primal jungle, as Rudyard Kipling would have said. Bright shafts of sunlight shine their rays through the trees in Corbett National Park. It is situated in the foothills of the Himalyas and is well known for its diverse flora and fauna. The area is thickly foliated with 'Sal' trees (giant teak like hard wood trees). Corbett has a richness of forest. As well as being an important refuge for the Indian tiger it is an important home for the Indian elephant and many other species. The park nestles in the foothills of the Himalayas It is in the state of Uttaranchal (a new state formed in 2000 which used to be part of Uttar Pradesh). Originally called Hailey, it is one of the oldest National Parks In India having been established on 1936. Its full name is the Jim Corbett National Park named after the explorer and hunter who helped set up the park. It is one of the areas set up in India as as a Tiger Reserve. At a recent count (1993) there were 3,750 tigers in India, up from 1800 in 1972. The HQ of Corbett National park is in the town of Ramnagar.
