Grimsby Fishing Trawlers on North Wall of Grimsby Fish Docks. Circa 1960. End of an era.

NORTH WALL. After taking on ice, fuel etc, this is where the trawlers moored up before setting off on another trip. The crew had to climb up these ladders seen at the bows carrying their duffel bags full of whatever they personally needed for the trip and they climbed those ladders come hail snow or blow, midday or midnight, sober or 'the worse for wear' mostly the latter as normally they only had about three days ashore before the next trip. It was also commonplace for the stores to be taken on board here and if you were unlucky that also meant carrying everything up those ladders! The iconic Grimsby dock tower can be seen in the background in the centre of the picture.
