Lurgan has long held the first place in the manufactureof cambric, lawn, and cambric handkerchiefs, and in diapers, and Ballymenastands out pre-eminent for its fine yard-wide plain linens. Carrickfergus, ten miles from Belfast,- formerly the county town of xtrim,received its name from Carrig, a rock, and Feargus, an Irish hero who was lostin a storm some three centuries before the Christian era. It has an ancient andturbulent record of wars, and sieges, and sanguinary conflicts. Standing on a low rock, it projects into the sea, and isordinarily surrounded on three sides by water. It occupies a military position ofgreat importance, and is the only one of the ancient Norman fortresses remainingin a state of preservation.
