water pipeline through the Western Australian Wheatbelt

Water and the search for water has and continues to be a core problem for Western Australian society. When gold was discovered in the 1890s near Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie some 550kms east of Perth, water supply became a key problem. The brilliant engineer, CY O'Connor designed the pipleline that runs from Mundaring Weir just east of Perth to the WA Goldfields and the pipeline continues to service the gold mining capital of Australia today - as well as numerous towns and centers along the way. This sunset image shows the historic and important pipeline as it crosses a salt lake in the Western Australian Wheatbelt today.
