It is admitted by all critics to bealmost faultless, whether considered with regard tothe harmony of its proportions, its internal arrange-ment, or the beauty and fitness of its architecturalplan or ornament. The facade is formed by a base-ment of rustic-work pierced with frequent arches,and supporting Corinthian columns, which alternatewith windows corresponding to the arches whole is crowned by a noble cornice, the piersof its balustrade being formed of clustered flags,spears, and shields. Similar ornaments are used atthe corners of the pediments rising above the threemiddle windows, one marking the principal en-trance, which is through the centre CHAPTER XXIV.
