Contractor using a clamshell-type excavator mounted onto a crawler crane to build underground diaphragm retaining walls.

A diaphragm (or slurry) wall being excavated by using a special trench cutter called a clamshell digger. Once completed, a steel reinforced cage is inserted and the trench is filled with concrete to create retaining walls under the surface. The absence of vibration and shock makes this system very suitable for use on urban sites. This excavation system makes it possible to drill diaphragm wall in a very wide range of ground, from cohesionless soils to hard rock.
