The artist and painter Sheila Healey. (born 1915- died 2017) England, UK
Sheila Healey was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1915 and moved to Central America in her early twenties. She lived and worked in Mexico City, Chiapas and Guatemala City before moving to New York in 1941 and later to California in 1947, firstly to Los Angeles and eventually to Big Sur in 1955. Since 1970 she has lived and worked in Sussex, UK. She was trained in Mexico at the height of the muralist movement under the Russian Angelina Beloff, the first wife of Diego Rivera. Later she worked in California with the circle of artists and patrons of now legendary status amongst whom were Rico le Brun ( her teacher) the Arensbergs, Lee Mullican, Wolfgang Paalen, Luchita Hurtado, the Huxleys, Henry Miller, the photographers Brett Weston and Ansel Adams and her husband Giles Healey the explorer and photographer of the Maya culture. During the 1940’s Sheila exhibited widely in Los Angeles with solo shows at the Pasadena Art Institute, the Vincent Price Gallery, UCLA and the Los Angeles County Museum, with solo shows in Guatemala City 1946 and the Norlyst Gallery New York in 1948. She was a regular exhibitor at the Coast Gallery, Big Sur from 1954 to 1964. In the last two decades she has had retrospectives in London’s Gallery 27, Cork Street in 1999 and 2005, the Lewis Elton Gallery at the University of Surrey and the Lightbox Museum Woking, in 2012. She continues to draw and paint as she celebrates her centenary in 2015.
