They include deer crossing before and after track counting period, deer crossing during storms, and those crossing rocky places in the track bed. Pellet Count Each spring when the forage utilization check is made, groups of deer droppings are counted on tenth-acre strips, 11 chains long and six feet wide. The pellet group count is converted into deer days by use of a conversion factor of groups per deer day, as determined by Rasmussen and Doman (1943). In the past, pellet group counts were used by the committee to esti- mate the deer population. Now that only the key management area is sampled each year, the pellet count is used as an indicator of the trend in deer use on that 4^ ;M&E(. DRive.
