STATUS OF THE SCREW-WORM (Cochliomyia hominivorax) IN THE SOUTHWEST During the period August 17-23, a total of 48,499,960 sterile flies was released over an area of 63,000 square miles. Release rate was 400 per square mile, with some areas in southern Texas receiving up to 800 sterile flies per square mile. A total of 802 screw-worm cases was reported during the period.
